Furniture design began to grasp inspiring ideas from De Stijl towards the end of the century. Nonetheless only its aesthetics were taken into consideration, the idea of perfect compositional balance was lost, especially when talking about anti-designers of the 80s. The idea that was the horizon of anti-designers was to challenge the notion of a good design, yet designers challenged that using past achievements and already existing forms and styles. Ettore Sottsass and his Carlton bookcase is an example of how contemporary designers, saw De Stijl as something simple, curve-less and coloured and applied these features in a new manner of furniture making.
